An Australian designer has created stairs that double as drawers. That’s 2 in 1 function, and an excellent way to save space in a small home or apartment. For safety, they should have a springback system, or some way to make sure the drawer stays closed when not in use.
It’s always a great idea to utilize all possible space for the most efficiency. Here are the design plans for this staircase storage.

As the owner of a small home, I like the concept but I don’t know if I’m comfortable with the engineering. My fear is the spring fails and the drawer comes open creating a hazard.
I agree… I love the concept, but I know that some people walk up and down the stairs when they’re half asleep.
It would be cool to do on the side of the stairway, and have the drawer pull out from the side of the stair. I think that would be nice for basement steps – to have about 4 of them be drawers, for storing tools, laundry supplies, etc. And, the drawer could have a latch.
What if the top of the step opened like a trunk. It could snap closed. It’s a fabulous idea with the drawers but I think a top open lid might be safer.
Yes, the flip top is definitely better! Then, the supports are always in place, but you can use the space effectively. Why didn’t anyone think of this before?! I could definitely use some extra storage. Now I’m dreaming of all the stuff I could store in my stairs… extra blankets, candles, tablecloths, seasonal clothes, Christmas ornaments!, etc.
